The City of Gadsden is holding one last party before the end of summer by transforming a downtown street with the huge Slide the City event on July 25-26, 2026. "We just finished up a fantastic Fourth of July celebration with Freedom Fest, but we're not done yet," said Mayor Craig Ford. "This Back-to-School bash is one of the most unique events Gadsden has ever seen. We want everyone to come out and have a good time at Slide the City before summer is over." Slide the City will feature a massive 1,000-foot-long Slip 'n Slide-style water party experience downtown on S. 3rd St. near Riverview Regional Medical Center. Part of our overall plan to improve safety and traffic flow in downtown Gadsden includes converting intersections from red lights into four-way stops. Beginning this morning, June 15, 2026, we will begin flashing traffic lights red for 30 days in preparation for installing those four-way stops. All traffic signals on Broad St. and Chestnut St. from 1st St. to 7th St. (except for 1st and Broad) will be flashing red. If you come to an intersection with flashing red lights, remember to treat the intersection exactly like a four-way stop.     1    Come to a complete stop behind the stop line, crosswalk or before entering the intersection.     2    Yield to vehicles already stopped first. The first vehicle to stop is the first vehicle allowed to go.     3    If two vehicles stop at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right-of-way.     4    Yield to pedestrians and emergency vehicles. Always allow pedestrians to cross safely and pull over for emergency responders when necessary.     5    Proceed only when safe. After yielding appropriately, continue through the intersection cautiously.     6    Never roll through or assume you automatically have the right-of-way. We’re looking forward to the improvement this will make for downtown, and we appreciate your patience as we all get used to the new traffic flow!

Today, during their visit, the MINTH Group donated to A Walk Through Time with Forrest Cemetery. Not only will MINTH provide jobs and economic growth to Gadsden, but they will also invest in events and causes that are important to the community, and will continue to grow Gadsden.

The 200 block of Broad St. is closed for work on a new pedestrian crossing. ⚠ Remember that businesses are still OPEN, as are sidewalks (with the exception of the sidewalk section closed in front of the new City Hall). We were excited to celebrate the ribbon cutting for Pencco in Gadsden! This project represents the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication. Since its announcement, Pencco has invested $20 million and created up to 40 jobs in their Gadsden facility. It was a pleasure to welcome owner Ron Horne to town for this special milestone, and to have David Hooks and his IDA Board whose support is significant to this project, and many others. We’re proud to see continued growth and investment in Gadsden!

Today, we pause to honor and remember the heroes who gave everything for our country. We are indebted to every man and woman who offered all they had, and we should never take the gift of freedom for granted. In recognition of Memorial Day, City Hall will be closed today, and reopen tomorrow, May 26, at 8 am.

Last weekend, Gadsden had 30 athletes qualify for and place at the State Meet in Enterprise after winning multiple events at the ARPA District IV Track Meet in Jacksonville. The City of Gadsden was very well represented at the Challenger Learning Center Grand Opening. Dr. Farrah Hayes and the team she put together have created a facility that will allow the youth of our region and community to receive a high-quality STEM education from professionals right here at home. Fifth graders from Eura Brown and Donehoo Elementary Schools had the incredible opportunity to be part of the first class to complete the training program. We're excited about this improvement to our downtown, and we appreciate your patience!

We're starting work on a new Fire Station No. 8 at the corner of Rainbow Drive and Riley St., so we've had to remove the recycling trailers that were there. We're currently working to add another neighborhood location, but in the meantime, we've added another trailer at 1401 Rainbow Drive (Gadrock). As soon as we have new trailers added, we'll let you know!

Former City Council member Deverick Williams presented Gadsden Parks and Recreation with a generous $4,000 donation from the Coach Rudolph Foundation. Named in honor of his father, the foundation continues a legacy of impacting young lives through athletics. Thank you, Deverick, for your continued support of youth sports in Gadsden!

On March 31, the City Council recognized the valued work of the James M. Barrie Center with a proclamation, joined by partner organizations Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the Children’s Trust Fund from Montgomery, and Gadsden State Community College. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The James M. Barrie Center and their partners work 365 days a year to ensure the safety of children in and around Gadsden. Their advocacy, support services, and collaboration with schools and law enforcement are irreplaceable in our community, and we are grateful for their dedication to protecting children and supporting families. In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Gadsden Monument will be illuminated blue for the month of April.

The Mayor’s Office and city officials traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Senators Britt and Tuberville, as well as Congressman Mike Rogers, to discuss grants and appropriations to invest in Gadsden. They also met with the Appalachian Regional Council to follow up on a grant for new projects. Our city officials are working hard to bring your tax dollars back home and invest in initiatives that improve the quality of life for our residents.

The City of Gadsden is offering an Amnesty Court Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The court office will remain open through lunch for Amnesty. The amnesty program provides an opportunity for those with certain municipal court charges to clear their cases without concern of being physically arrested. Amnesty is offered to all individuals who have received traffic, misdemeanors, failed to appear, owe fines, have a warrant and any pending charges. On Amnesty Day, Judge Welch will accept one half of the amount that is owed to the court (has to be paid in full that day) and the court will remit the balance owed. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this program may do so by appearing in court on March 25, 2026. Only cases that have been previously adjudicated are eligible for this promotion. Pre-trial diversion cases are NOT ELIGIBLE for Amnesty Day. Typically, the cases eligible for consideration for Amnesty are failure to appear in court and defendants that owe fines and fees. For any information concerning the Amnesty Day Procedure call the Court Office at 256-549-4595.

We're finishing up some downtown road and sidewalk projects! Two streets will be temporarily closed for final paving tomorrow (Friday, March 13, 2026). Starting at 6 a.m., Chestnut St. will be closed from South 6th St. to South 7th St. There will also be a closure on South 6th St. from Broad St. to Chestnut St. Both of these closures will last until 7 p.m., and we do not expect work to extend beyond Friday. Minth Group Limited will turn the former Republic Steel site into its largest global campus, a $430 million investment that will bring more than 1,300 jobs and to a place that once defined our industrial past. This project is a monumental step towards renewal and confidence in the future of Gadsden and Northeast Alabama, that will help the city, county, and state of Alabama to move forward in advanced manufacturing. In this week’s Mayor’s Minute, Mayor Ford announces a major new development expected to bring up to 1,400 jobs to Gadsden, discusses the EPA’s complete removal of hazardous chemicals from the Techtrix building, and provides updates on Takkion’s work at the former Goodyear facility and current paving projects across the city.

We have a new date for Free Dumpster Day -- March 21, 2026 -- just in time for spring cleaning! The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Remember that we have a change in location: Dumpsters will be available behind Emma Sansom Middle School (2200 block of Sansom Avenue). Part of the street will be closed, and you should enter from Meighan Blvd at the Alabama City Center / N 21st St. Other dumpsters will be at their previous locations: East Gadsden Community Center (921 Wilson Ave) and the parking lot across from The Amp (346 S 1st St). Items not accepted: liquids, household garbage, tires, batteries (car, cell phone, etc.), glass, paint cans and electronics/old TVs. You can also go directly to the landfill at 111 Burns Way Drive, which will be open from 7 a.m. - noon for free dumping *with a valid Gadsden identification.* All metal and construction debris (shingles, sheet rock, wood, etc.) should be taken directly to the landfill. We have the right to refuse any load at dumpster locations. Got some items you want to recycle instead of throwing away? Gadsden Recycles (306 Henry St) will be open from 7 a.m. - noon. You can drop off cardboard, newspaper, aluminum, and electronics. (No glass or plastic at this time.)
